Pharmacology

Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid medication that belongs to the class of corticosteroids. It works by suppressing the immune system and reducing inflammation in the body. One of its mechanisms of action is preventing the migration of leukocytes (a type of white blood cell) to sites of inflammation. It also reverses the enhanced permeability of capillaries, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation. By inhibiting the immune system's normal response, dexamethasone can effectively reduce inflammation in various conditions.

Dosage & Administration of Oradexon 0.5mg Tablet

Glucocorticoid dosages can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the individual response of the patient. Here are some general guidelines for oral dexamethasone dosages:

  • For adult patients: The daily oral dosage typically ranges from 1 mg to 10 mg, based on the individual's response to the medication.
  • For children: The daily oral dosage is usually between 0.03 mg/kg and 0.20 mg/kg of body weight, depending on the individual's response.
  • In certain cases, higher dosages may be temporarily necessary to effectively control the disease. However, as soon as the circumstances allow, the dosage should be gradually decreased.
  • A short dexamethasone suppression test may be conducted to assess the response. In this test, 1 mg of dexamethasone is given at 11 p.m., and the plasma cortisol level is measured the following morning.
  • If there is no decrease in cortisol levels, a longer test may be performed. This involves administering 0.5 mg of dexamethasone every 6 hours for 48 hours, followed by 2 mg every 6 hours for an additional 48 hours. 24-hour urine collections are conducted before, during, and at the end of the test to measure 17 alpha-hydroxy corticoids.

It's important to note that these dosages and testing procedures are general guidelines, and individual patients may require different dosages based on their specific condition and response to treatment. The dosages should always be determined and adjusted by a healthcare professional.

Interaction

Oradexon 0.5mg Tablet may interact with the following drugs:

  1. Aspirin: There may be an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when dexamethasone is used concomitantly with aspirin.
  2. Phenytoin and Carbamazepine: These anticonvulsant medications may decrease the effectiveness of dexamethasone.
  3. Phenobarbital and Primidone: These sedative-hypnotic medications may increase the metabolism of dexamethasone, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
  4. Rifampicin and Rifabutin: These antibiotics may increase the metabolism of dexamethasone, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
  5. Aminoglutethimide and Methotrexate: These anticancer medications may increase the metabolism of dexamethasone, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
  6. Warfarin: Dexamethasone may decrease the effectiveness of warfarin, leading to a decreased anticoagulant effect.
  7. Ritonavir, Darunavir, and Indinavir: These antiretroviral drugs may affect the metabolism of dexamethasone, potentially altering its effectiveness.
  8. Carbamazepine: Dexamethasone may decrease the effectiveness of carbamazepine.

  • Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections.
  • Viral infections, e.g., varicella and herpes genitals infections. Viral infections of the eye.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Dexamethasone, the active ingredient in Oradexon 0.5mg Tablet, is classified as Pregnancy Category C. This means that there are no adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women, and its use during pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.

It is also known that glucocorticoids, including dexamethasone, can pass into breast milk. Therefore, mothers who are taking high doses of corticosteroids are typically advised not to breastfeed to avoid potential adverse effects on the nursing infant.

It's important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and consider the use of Oradexon 0.5mg Tablet or any other medication. They can provide you with the most appropriate and up-to-date guidance based on your specific situation.
